BAM Explained: Does the Bible talk about business?

Welcome to our new mini-blog series, where we’ll be explaining core principles of Business as Mission through practical examples. To start, we’re addressing a popular question: Does the Bible talk about business?

The short answer is, yes.

The Bible is often viewed as an encyclopedia with direct references to all of life’s topics. Yet, while the Bible is our guide for navigating life’s complex challenges, we don’t always find direct mentions to every situation.

Nonetheless, the Bible is rich with principles and values that can be applied to any situation when understood in the right context.

The following verses speak to the importance of profit-generating work and the stewardship of wealth; two foundational concepts of business.

Proverbs 31:17-18 describes a noble businesswoman who, “[…] sets about her work vigorously” and, ”sees that her trading is profitable”.

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus cautions his followers not to place their hope in money by saying,

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth […] for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

This is sound advice for those in business to prioritize eternal impact alongside earthly goals.

Luke 19:11-27 presents the well-known Parable of the Talents. In short, the parable reveals that those who invest the resources God has already given them will be rewarded, while those who do nothing with their resources will receive nothing.

Business is all about investment, growth, and re-investment - a principle that is established and affirmed in this parable.

Finally, Paul encourages entrepreneurship and hard work in 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 when he writes, “You should mind your own business and work with your hands […] so that you will not be dependent on anybody.” Paul paints a picture of a simple life, yet many people in Canada are unable to make this a reality.

Profitable and sustainable business provides opportunities to those who desire to live an honourable life such as the one Paul describes.

Even without direct reference, the Bible offers great wisdom and encouragement for believers working in business.

In the Old Testament, we see a woman praised not just for working hard, but also for operating a profitable business. Throughout the Gospels and Paul’s letters, it’s clear that hard work, investing resources, being financially independent, and stewarding profit well are principles that God values.

These verses are a great place to start when thinking about how to integrate your faith with business.

If you’ve ever questioned your call into business, be encouraged! God has a purpose for business, and uses people like you to achieve that purpose.
